And I'm not really sure what you're asking.

But;

"must everyone sacrifice ourselves for the ideals of one person, even as we accept those ideals are for the "greater-good"?"

Probably not - because often, the needs of the few can equate to the needs of the many, particularly in our complex society.

More pragmatically though;

Take the other day when I was in a parking lot and came across an old woman struggling with the meter machine. She couldn't work out why it wouldn't give her a ticket. I found out that she was 50p (circa $1.00) short of her fee. I gave her it. Though very thankful, she seemed bemused why a stranger would give her money. She offered to return it, of course I said no.

Altruistic? Probably. But I got a warm, happy feeling from helping her that lasted quite a while. Therefore I got a rather nice payback. Selfish then? Maybe.jamonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18272740536152837140noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8150670299444200192.post-70031405800522159322006-12-07T21:27:00.000+00:002006-12-07T21:27:00.000+00:00A genetic predisposition to altruism?
Is it self...A genetic predisposition to altruism?

Is it self-less versus self-ish in personality, or, is it dominant versus recessive in traits (be they physical, psychological, or even spiritual?)

Rather, must everyone sacrifice ourselves for the ideals of one person, even as we accept those ideals are for the "greater-good"?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
