Freedom to hate?

The Westboro Baptist Church has just been fined $10.9 million for the hurt and anguish it caused the Snyder family when they picketed their son's funeral who'd died in action in Iraq.

You'll have heard of these nutballs I'm sure. They're the idiots who blame homosexuals for the death of soldiers. These idiots have been demonstrating at funerals for a while now under the false guise of 'free speech'.

What they fail to understand is the difference between free speech and hate speech. The families lawyer summed up sentiments well when he urged the jury to make their message clear - "Do not bring your circus of hate to Maryland again".

The Rev Fred Phelps retorted outside the court that "It will take the 4th Circuit of Appeals a few minutes to reverse this silly thing."

I think not, matey. The fine will bankrupt the church. Somehow I doubt it will silence these gimps though as they see themselves as the moral saviors of the US.

Was it Kant who first made the link between aesthetics and morality? You know what I mean - Art being hard to define, yet we know it when we see it. Equally, it's hard to define morality, but we know wrong from right when we see it.

The problem is - their sense of aesthetic morality is more felt tip than fine art.

To hammer home my point, check out their latest 'hymn'.

Honestly, it's not a spoof. FFS.

This is the saddest thing I have seen in a long time. I can hardly believe this arrogance and hatred. :(

I hate to think what sort of people actually attend that "church"...scary. Probably some serious (and dangerous) psychos.

Jesus is weeping.

Apparently the membership is mostly Felps' family.

It's probably some genetic mutation.

"Thank God for Dead Soldiers" That about sums it up, eh?

But then, if the Westboro Baptist Church is correct about America being punished for tolerating homosexuality, then shouldn't their signs read: "Thank Gays for Dead Soldiers"?

Here's a thought, what would the Rev Fred Phelps have to say if a group of right proper flaming queers showed up at the funeral of one of his followers, and picketed with, "Thank God for Dead Fundamentalists"? I wonder if he would be so keen to protect their right to free speech?

Perhaps we should get rid of the Don't Ask/ Don't Tell policy, and then tabulate the number of gay soldiers who died in Iraq to compare it to the number of heterosexual soldiers who died... Or, can we elucidate G-d's wrath statistically?

Better yet, reinstate the draft, and call to service all the homosexuals and all the fundamentalists, send them out to the desert, and let them all fight to the death. The Fox channel could show it live as their newest reality show. Jesus would have his eyes glued to the TV for that, eh?

Seriously, however, at some point in my life I'd like to see a large group of protesters carrying signs that read, "Mind Your Own Business".
